Where are website version numbers used?

Software version numbers are used everywhere in development environments for software libraries. Recording or keeping track of a version number helps to check if the software is up-to-date, or whether the software needs to be upgraded to the latest version.

In JavaScript libraries, the software version is usually indicated in the header, located at the top of the file. The software version number of web server software is often noted in the HTTP header, for example the version number of Apache web server or IIS.
